Pre-requisites for donning and doffing of Personal Protective Equipment
1. Separate donning area
2. Separate doffing area, divided into Area 1 and Area 2
3. Lockers to keep personal belongings
4. Donning checklist
5. Buddy should be present for donning and doffing. Buddy at doffing area should be in full PPE.
6. Micropore tape to tape the gloves with gown
7. Permanent marker to write name of the health care personnel
8. Scissors
9. Shower facility
10. Disposal bins at patient room, Area 1, Area 2 for disposable and reusable items like goggles
11. Disposal bins for scrubs
12. Sanitizer
13. Soap
14. Water
15. Water proof dressing

PPE components:
For coverall:
1. Hospital scrub
2. Surgical cap
3. Coverall
4. Shoe cover (short)
5. At least N95 or FFP2 respirator
6. Goggles
7. Face shield
8. Plastic apron
9. Short gloves
10. Long gloves



For disposable gown:
1. Hospital scrub
2. Surgical cap
3. Disposable gown- long, reinforced
4. Head cover
5. Boots or Shoe cover (long)
6. Shoe cover (short)
7. At least N95 or FFP2 respirator
8. Goggles
9. Face shield
10. Plastic apron
11. Short gloves
12. Long gloves


CHECKLIST FOR DONNING OF FULL BODY COVERALL

 Do the donning only in presence of a buddy to check correct donning

Before donning:
 Wear hospital scrubs before donning
 Put on closed shoes or boots
 Tie hair
 Remove jewelry
 Empty pockets
 Use surgical cap
 Hydrate adequately
 Go to toilet if needed
 Proceed to donning only if you are feeling well

Enter donning area:
 Perform hand hygiene with soap and water
 Cover any cuts or abrasions with water proof dressing
 Put on N95 or FFP2 respirator

• Hold mask to cover nose and mouth
• Pull lower strap and take over the head, below the ears.
• Pull and take upper strap over the head, over the ears.
• Check if straps are tight fitting.
• Press over the nose piece and over the cheek for tight fit. the lower portion of mask should go below the chin.
• Blow out forcefully: air should not come out from around the mask when the mask is fit.
• Do not enter patient area if not fit tested.

 Put on goggles. It should be tight fit.
 Put on full body suit with shoes on. Pull on the fastener and Velcro so that the top portion overlaps with lower part of mask so that neck is covered.
 Put on hood of the suit.
 Put on inner gloves. The gloves should go inside the cuff of the coverall.
 Put on shoe cover.
 Put on outer plastic apron.
 Tie around the back at neck and waist
 Should achieve high fit with apron high up over the chest area
 Put on face shield/ visor.
 Ensure band of visor overlaps the hood with no skin showing
 Visor shield should overlap with sides of hood
 No skin exposed around jaw line
 Put on outer long gloves that covers the cuff. Tape it with gown.
 Put any work gloves over this outer gloves. Put on sterile gloves if required over the outer gloves.


Buddy should always be present to check the steps and confirm correct donning.

DO NOT ENTER PATIENT ROOM
• If any gap in PPE
• If N95 mask is not fit checked
• If you are feeling unwell

AFTER ENTERING PATIENT ROOM, REMAIN VIGILANT OF PPE INTEGRITY

LEAVE ROOM IMMEDIATELY AND INFORM BUDDY PRIOR TO DOFFING IN CASE OF
• High exposure episode- eg projectile vomiting
• If any concern about PPE integrity

 Write name, designation of healthcare personnel + time of donning on the gown shoulder with a marker
 Run through the checklist to ensure correct steps.
