10 Animals That Can Kill a Lion
Lions are magnificent predators, as they should, if they are going to live up to their nickname “the king
of the jungle”. Funnily enough, they don’t even live in jungles, but we won’t get into that today. In this
video, we will talk about some animals that have the ability to depose the king, and not only win, but
win decisively.
From a strong and intelligent primate to a prickly underdog, here are 10 animals that can kill a lion.
Number 10. Silverback Gorillas
Silverback gorillas are massive contenders for a lion. These beasts range between 5-and-a-half to 6 feet
tall and can weigh up to a whopping 500 pounds. On average, they at least 4 times stronger than
humans. They can lift up to 1,800 pounds and effectively throw with nearly 990 pounds of force.
Lions bring a lot in this fight too. They edge the gorilla in bite force and weaponry. The gorilla’s large
canines are not designed for biting into flesh and while they’re jaw muscles are strong enough to break
through bark, roots, vines, twigs, and bamboo, they can’t sever spines which the lion can easily do. A
lion’s power isn’t something to sneeze at as well.
However, we give this fight to the gorilla because of a couple of reasons; intelligence and stamina. The
massive strength of a lion has a drawback, and that is it can’t sustain it for long. A smart gorilla may have
the intelligence to make it a drawn out battle, and with its superior stamina, outlast the lion and win the
fight.
Number 9. Hippos

Hippos are one of the most dangerous mammals in Africa, killing an estimated 2,900 people every year.
And that death toll isn’t really that surprising, given how fierce these animals are. Their gaping jaws are
extremely strong, and their teeth weigh an average of 6.5 pounds each and can grow to just under feet
long. Astonishingly, these gigantic animals can also run up to 30 miles per hour, so charging opponents is
an easy feat.
Unless the hippo is young, very old, injured or sick, a lion will definitely lose in this fight. A healthy hippo
is simply too large, powerful, and aggressive for a single lion to handle alone. With that said, I don’t even
think a lion would be capable of approaching one of these beasts without sustaining an injury, much like
when this lioness tried to make a make a meal out of a sleeping hippo.
At one point, the hippo even grabbed the lioness by the neck and effortlessly tossed her around.
Somehow, the lioness was able to free herself — narrowly escaping with her life.
Number 8. Grizzly Bears
Just by considering the size difference alone, a grizzly bear could probably take a lion in a fight. The
average grizzly bear can weigh up to 400kgs and more with a height of 7ft and should height of 4ft.
Those dimensions easily make a grizzly twice the size of a lion.
With both animals having the ability to rear up on their hind legs, a bear’s height advantage may not be
an advantage. However, the bear is able to maintain a vertical position for a greater length of time, so
will be more effective at pounding and pummeling from up high. However, the lion’s agility and
expertise in evasive maneuvers may result in a lot of missed punches. But then again, a lion’s lack of
stamina may prove his undoing in this fight. He can only go evading for a short period of time, and one
strong blow from the bear’s massive paws would probably end the fight.
Number 7. Elephants
There are generally two kinds of elephants; the Asian and the African, but we’ll focus on the African
elephant because this is a fight that has a higher likelihood of happening. The African elephants are the
largest mammals on earth. They weigh around 5000 to 6000 kg and the largest elephant to be recorded
weighed about 24,000 kg and was 13 feet tall.
Considering that the African elephant is much bigger and stronger than the African lion, it can easily kill
the latter. The lion’s primary weapon is its bite, which won’t amount to nothing against an elephant’s
tough hide. An elephant only has to do one thing to kill a lion, and that’s by stepping on it.
Oh and let’s not forget those long, sharp tusks some of these elephants have. They can, and have, killed
lions in the past by using these tusks. Add to that the elephant’s superior intelligence and potential for
aggressiveness when disturbed, lions simply don’t stand a chance.
