10 Craziest Purchases By Billionaires
For us in the general populace, purchase decisions are always preceded by moments of pondering. You know, you have a limited amount of money and lots of things you wish to buy.
So it’s a matter of deciding what to go for and what to forget. It’s called opportunity cost in fancy terms.
But when you have more than a billion dollars in assets and cash, things become a bit different. At least from what we’ve seen the world's richest do. Their leading question is probably "do I like this?" instead of "do I need this". As long as the item appeals to them, they're getting it at whatever cost.
That’s why some of these big shots end up with crazy possessions like the following 10.
#10 Scientific Scribbles By Leonardo Da Vinci
Leonardo da Vinci had a wide array of interests including invention, music, literature, painting, sculpture, science, and so on. He was a true polymath.
His works were so outstanding that he’s considered by some quarters as the father of various disciplines such as architecture, paleontology, and ichnology. But he is mainly known as a painter although there are just about 15 of his paintings that survived to this age. Guess you've heard of Mona Lisa?
Being a scientist, it's only natural that he kept a notebook where he jotted away his everyday observations. Anyone with an interest in the sciences will want to read from such a great mind in his handwriting.
In 1994, that someone was none other than billionaire Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates.
The successful businessman bought the Codex Leicester for $30 million at an auction house in New York. Adjusted to today’s inflation rate, the price is a little over $53 million. This hefty price tag makes the Codex Leicester the second most expensive book in the world.
The 72-page notebook is a collection of the great thinker’s observations and theories about different topics such as fossils, astronomy, and properties of water and rocks.
#9 A Billy The Kid Photo
Billy the Kid was born Henry McCarthy in the American Old West. Orphaned at the age of 14, he spent the better part of his life committing crimes and running from those he had already committed. And by the way, he did this for just 7 years before he was gunned down at 21 years.
His notoriety led to him being branded as an outlaw which meant anyone was free to do as they wished with him – and that included killing him.
Today, there are just two confirmed photos of Billy the kid. One is designated the Dedrick ferrotype. Dan Dedrick was Billy’s friend and kept the photo after the outlaw passed away. So the ferrotype was passed down through Dan’s family until it was eventually purchased in 2011 by William Koch, a billionaire, sailor, and collector.
The photo which shows the notorious criminal with an 1873 Winchester rifle with the butt resting on the floor cost the billionaire $2.3 million at an auction.
#8 A Titanic Replica
At least everyone knows about the Titanic – the luxury ship that was touted as unsinkable but went down in the most tragic modern time marine disasters. And that was on its maiden voyage no less.
While the main reason for the unfortunate event was the fact that the ship hit an iceberg, there have been countless theories that fault several design flaws for the ship’s rapid sinking. That’s why you wouldn’t expect anyone to try and replicate the ill-fated vessel.
Even calling a completely different ship the same name won’t sit well with most people as it might be deemed insensitive to everyone who was affected by the marine accident.
But for Australian businessman Clive Palmer, none of these matters. The billionaire announced plans to have a Titanic replica dubbed Titanic II at a cost of $500 million. While the proposal is nailed down, the project has stalled ever since Palmer announced it. Some news outlets have even termed it as one of those publicity stunts the billionaire is known for.
The launch date has been pushed forward several times from 2016, 2018, and now to 2022.
#7 A Super Yacht
If there is something the superrich love is their boats. Having billions is surely enough to flex with the big boys. But having a luxury yacht is the ultimate icing on the cake.
If you have more than enough bucks to splurge, you can always stay ahead of the pack by going for the biggest and most expensive. At least we guess that was Roman Abramovich’s thought process when he blew $1.5 billion on his superyacht.
The Eclipse, as it is referred to, is about 553 feet long. At that length, it held the record as the longest yacht for some time until another longer vessel, Azzam, docked.
So what exactly does the Russian billionaire get to enjoy on this one of a kind extravagance piece? A lot, apparently.
