Lots of child stars end up going off the deep end when they get older. Being a celebrity is hard on most people, but the kids seem to really struggle with being a household name as they come into their own as adults. These 10 famous kids who ruined their careers are cautionary tales, although most of them managed to work through their issues eventually.

Number 10. Lindsay Lohan

Born in 1986, Lindsay Lohan started her acting career when she was young and was a well-known child star in the 90s and early 2000s. The highlight of her early career saw her starring in the remake of the classic movie The Parent Trap. From there, the sky was the limit for Lohan after she scored leading roles in the 2003 remake of Freaky Friday and Mean Girls, which debuted in 2004. As she got older, she began partying a little too hardy and ended up going on a wild tear for a few years. This didn’t earn her any friends in the press, with both reporters and paparazzi following her around, documenting her many antics, most of which painted her in a very bad light. Lohan got hooked on drugs during this stage in her life and in 2007 she was arrested for driving while under the influence after she smashed her mercedes benz into a tree. She was arrested once again not long after that, pulling chase. When she was eventually detained, police found cocaine on her person. She had to serve one day in jail after receiving the minimum sentence of four days. Seems like she got let out early for good behaviour. Later in 2007 Lohan was checked into rehab, but a few years after claiming she was totally sober she was arrested for a DUI and spent 90 days in jail after missing her court hearing. She was also booked in 2011 for shoplifting. Lohan has since gotten her life back on track and has been laying low, even landing roles in a few big movies in recent years.

Number 9. Amanda Bynes

Amanda Bynes is probably best known for being a part of All That on Nickelodeon back in the 90s, also hosting her own show, titled The Amanda Show at the same time. Acting was actually a big part of her life long before that point, starring in hits like Annie, The Secret Garden, and even The Sound of Music. Bynes was on a roll at the tail end of the 90s and starred in a number of hit TV shows after she parted ways with the cast of All That. Instead of pursuing a career in acting, Bynes took some time off after she graduated past being a child actor and that’s when things started going downhill. She was arrested for a few hit and runs and DUIs before having her car impounded for being caught while driving with a suspended license. From there, she got in trouble for drug use, allegedly having to deal with the cops after tossing a bong out of her apartment window, almost hitting a neighbour walking underneath. She was eventually put on psychiatric hold - twice - and had to check herself into rehab on a number of occasions. These days it seems like she’s left her hard partying lifestyle behind her and she’s even been talking about getting back into acting at some point, although she hasn’t pulled the trigger on that idea just yet. We assume she’s still got to earn back the respect she lost when she went off the rails, but we do hope to see her settling down a bit in the future and staying out of trouble.

Number 8. Britney Spears

Britney Spears was a household name in the 90s and she went from being a complete unknown to a pop star almost overnight. She hit the big leagues in 1995, but was a part of the Mickey Mouse Club before that point, which gave her a serious leg up. ‘Baby One More Time’ went straight to the top of the charts and Spears eventually graduated into being a little more risque as she got older. She got married in 2004, but that marriage was annulled only a few months in. She then got married again only a few months after that. From there, things began to spiral and she was caught driving with her son on her lap, with many people publicly questioning her parenting choices after the incident went viral. She was then hounded by the paparazzi for the next few years and they documented her full on breakdown, which involved her shaving her head and eventually having to check into rehab. She seems to be back on the level these days and hasn’t seen any negative press in years, which is a step in the right direction.
