Hey Co-stars and welcome to Generation Films, now Star Trek the original series, was an interesting show. Despite it’s cult following and progressive values, it did have its share of flaws. Like why do red shirts always die?
Why was the early Klingon make up basically black face? And did they forget to add the ski to this green screen shot?
Oh that is meant to be a green sky? OK…
But the ship itself, the USS enterprise was pretty solid right? I mean it was the star of the show. Well it seems it had its share of flaws as well, and it shows even in the STar Trek universe, the Excelsior class served in starfleet for about 100 years, it was a classic design that really lasted.
But the constitution class only served for about 30 years in it’s original form, from the 2340s to 2360s. Then in the 2370s all the remaining constitution class ships went through a complete refit, but they were overtaken by the excelsior class and not many made it into the 24th century.
So this this video, like we have done with other star trek ships, we are going to go through 10 flaws of the original USS Enterprise, and we will include the Enterprise A in this too because it is the same design.
Number One - Bridge and Easy Target
Now I know I have talked about this with other star trek ships, but with the original enterprise it is even more exaggerated, just look at how much this bridge sticks out at the top of the saucer section, talk about an easy target.
You know what happens when enemies target the bridge
That was the Enterprise E, but you get the idea. And what is more this thing on top is actually a window.
Have a look at how it is portrayed, with kind of terrible special effects, in the original pilot, the cage…
Isn’t having a big window above the crew’s heads, where enemies can look in kind of a weakness? I mean we know the klingons for example exploited using cameras to look at information on control panels in order to blow up the enterprise D.
Here is another image where you can see it is a huge window and you can clearly see control panels and people on the bridge. All you would need is a camera with good magnification and you could hover over there cloaked and get all the information you needed.
So yeah, kind of a security risk. I think the makers of the show realized this, and in later plans of the ship this dome was listed at an upper sensor array
Maybe that was after the refit, it seems in it’s original form the constitution class had a massive window here.
Number Two - Technical Problems
Now this was a case with the Enterprise A, which I am including because it is still a constitution class starship, same as the original.
But after the ship was built it was plagued by technical problems.
Yet starfleet sends them out on a mission anyway. They have a tendency of doing that, and they never learn, just look at what they did to the Enterprise B a few years later. ”
But what can you do eh? Perhaps in a world where money doesn’t exist, you just can’t get the staff to put these things together right. You get what you pay for.
Number Three - Unresponsive Shields
In the battle between the Enterprise and the USS Reliant commanded by Khan in Star Trek two. We hear Kirk say raise shields, but it appears the shields never go up.
Now this was a tense situation with the Enterprise crew observing an un responsive vessel, which then proceeds to raise its shields, then a few seconds later powers up and locks weapons. You would think the tactical officer’s finger would be hovering over the shields button just waiting for the order and would press it as soon as kirk says raise shields. So what happened? Maybe the shields just take ages to turn on, kind of reminds me of Dr Nefario’s scooter from despicable me two.
You press the button but the thing takes 10 mins to actually work. They don’t manage to get the shields up for the whole battle.
Number Four - The Bridge Panels Explode
Imagine living in a house that had dynamite in the walls, the slightest vibration and your living room was explodes, showering sparks, flames and smoke over the whole family. Because that is what they had to deal with on the enterprise. Hit the ship anywhere and the walls of the bridge instantly explode.
And yeah i mean anywhere on the ship other than the bridge, look at this clip of the enterprise A being attacked from the back, underside of the hull, the complete opposite side of the ship to the bridge and the bridge control panels on the bridge still start exploding.
