In everything where there are winners and losers, there are also cheaters. And if you’ve ever played a multiplayer game, from splitscreen at home to an MMO, you’ll know the frustration of someone who doesn’t play by the rules.

Even at the most elite end of some of the world’s most classic games, there are cheaters. Billy Mitchell, the weird-haired rockstar of arcade games, was recently caught cheating and had all his records stripped.

Others were banned for more severe offences, like a fake swatting on a Twitch Stream. Or, even worse, a fake disability invented for scam donations.

Some gamers are even banned for political offences. In the wake of the recent protests in Hong Kong, public figures in every field have been speaking out in support of Hong Kong’s right to independent governance. One pro Hearthstone player, after winning a tournament, paid tribute to the pro-democracy protesters. Although part of the ban was lifted, the fact of the ban itself did a lot to expose the many conflicts of interest in the world of gaming.
