Cities play important role in economy activities and development of human society. More than half of the world's population – 55 percent – lives in cities and as time goes on, it’s clear that more urban dwellers will find themselves living in megacities. According to the United Nations, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, sixty eight percent of the world’s population will live in the urban areas.
As the world continues to urbanize, a handful of countries will account for much of the growth. Asia is home to six of the 10 most populous areas in the world. Between 2018 and 2050, the U.N. estimates 35 percent of urbanization will occur in India, China and Nigeria alone. While Tokyo only gained 559,000 people between 2010 and 2020, Delhi gained over 8 million people in the same time frame. Shanghai grew by over 7 million people. Meanwhile, São Paulo grew by more than 2 million, and Mexico City gained just over 1.6 million people.
