10 Most Amazing Deep Sea Creatures

The sea bed is full of life, although lots of unexplained phenomena happen there. It is not the natural habitat for faint-hearted animals because the condition there is exceptionally harsh.

By extremely harsh, I mean that the creatures there do not get enough sunlight needed for daily survival, but they survive still. Does it surprise you to know that about 8,700,000 species on earth live in the deep sea? As we speak, only about 9 percent of these species can be identified.

We cannot overemphasize how amazing the creatures that stay in this gruesome environment are. Their survival mechanism is fierce since food is scarce. Some animals can surmount the challenges the deep sea pose and thrive against all the odds.

Today we will be looking at ten amazing deep-sea creatures that would trigger your curiosity and answer some of your mind-boggling questions. Join me as I feed you in on the lives and activities of these creatures. If you are ready, let's go.

 Number 10 - Blobfish

A 2003 research revealed a species of deep-sea creature no one thought existed. The blobfish flows deep off the ocean of Australia and Tasmania. One fantastic trait of these fish is that it doesn't have a swim bladder.

Why is a swim bladder necessary when it lives 2,600 feet deep in the ocean? The skin is made of gelatinous tissues, thus permitting this fish to swim on the surface of the water.

Number 9 - Christmas Tree Worms

If you think that Christmas tree worms are insects that feed on Christmas trees, then you are mistaken. They are not seasonal creatures, nor do they have any relationship with Christmas festivals or trees.

This creature draws its name from its appearance – it has the semblance of a Christmas tree. The Christmas tree is colorful and well decorated to suit the season, and so is this fantastic creature that makes the bottom of the ocean home. These worms have two brightly colored crowns on their tube-like body. These crowns are typical of Christmas trees as they glitter and look attractive.

The appendages on the body of this creature aid respiration and feeding. Christmas tree worms run for safety in their burrows when they sense a predator. They don't grow big, but their shimmers make it impossible not to be noticed.

Number 8 - Mimic Octopus

This creature is called a Mimic Octopus because it can mimic 15 different animals and switch characters rapidly. Call it the sea version of Will Smith if you will, but this creature would be the delight of movie directors if it were human.

Because of its mimicking abilities, it can be confused for a sea snake, a crab, jellyfish, etc. Mimicry helps this creature get food even amid predators. This smart creature uses mimicry both as a means of tricking their prey or intimidating predators. It forages during the day, and at night it hides in a burrow.

This creature was discovered for the first time in 1998 in Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Did you know that Mimic Octopus can transform into different shapes because it has a flexible skeleton? Well, now, you know.
Number 7 - Giant Oarfish

The sizable giant oarfish is a 36-meter-deep sea fish. It subscribes to the amiiform mode of swimming, where it shows its long dorsal fin. Most gelatinous fishes are inedible, and the giant oarfish is not an exception.

Most of the time, this fish is washed up at sea; thus, it is almost impossible to see a live giant oarfish. Before 2001, no one saw a living oarfish. Because contact with a live oarfish is rare, it is unclear the dangers this sea creature poses to humans. Details about this sea creature are still sketchy as scientists think there is a relationship between the giant oarfish and the mythological sea serpent.
his oarfish wears a silvery-blue skin with blemishes and undulating markings on the body. The pinkish or red-colored fins make this fish stand out amid the shoal of fish. The giant oarfish lays eggs as large as 2-4 meters long.

If the giant oarfish lived on land, it could be mistaken for a snake due to its physical morphology. It stands as the longest bony fish in the world.
