10 Most Dangerous Prisons In The World
Prisons are built to keep criminal elements away from the general populace, hence making the world a
better place. They are not, however, built to dehumanize the inmates that are kept inside their walls, at
least, in the past few decades when inmate treatment and rights have been reformed.
However, there are still a few institutions operating to this day that treat their inmates as less than
human, thus making them extremely dangerous places, and today, we’ll be talking about some of them.
From the oldest prison in the US, to a prison that could only be described as hell on earth, here are 10 of
the most dangerous prisons on earth.

Number 10. San Quintin Prison
As one of the oldest prisons in the United States, San Quentin was among the country’s most well-
known, referenced in numerous movies, television shows, songs, and even books. Opened in 1854, the
penitentiary is not only the state’s oldest prison, but also its only facility that conducts executions.
Being so old, it was the site for California’s first state conducted execution which was done by hanging. A
gas chamber was installed in 1938 and continued to see use until 1996 when it was replaced by lethal
injection.
Throughout its history, San Quentin was the site of violence, perhaps most notably in the 1960s and
’70s. Of particular note was a failed escape in 1971 that left six people dead, and the violence continues
to this day. A particular incident happened in February 2006 when some racially motivated attacks
resulted in injuries to 100 inmates. 2 inmates lost their lives. Add to that the poor conditions inmates
have to deal with every single day makes this prison a particularly dangerous place.

Number 9. Riker’s Island
Rikers Island is a 413.17-acre island in the East River between Queens and the Bronx and is home to one
of the world's largest correctional institutions and mental institutions, and has been described as New
York's most famous jail, and that’s famous for all the wrong reasons.
The institution has always had a reputation for violence, both abuse and neglect of inmates, and has
attracted tons of media and judicial scrutiny that has resulted in numerous rulings against the New York
City government, and numerous assaults by inmates on uniformed and civilian staff, resulting in often
serious injuries. So violent in fact that it has always ranked as one of the ten worst correctional facilities
in the United States.
Former guard John Reyes once spoke of being afraid on a daily basis because of the beatings and
murders he witnessed there. Because of the prison’s history of violence, it is now one of the strictest
prisons in the world. Of course, quite a few reform actions at the prison have helped reduce the number
of stabbings a year down from 1,000 to 70.

Number 8. ADX-Florence Supermax Facility

Built in 1994 in Florence, Colorado, ADX Florence Supermax Facility is the most secure prison in the
United States prison system, possibly even the world. Commonly referred to as a “Supermax” prison, it
has 490 beds in a compound which encompasses 37 acres.
The prison was designed to house prisoners deemed too dangerous or high-profile for your normal, run
of the mill prison, and nearly 95% of all inmates incarcerated there are transfers from other prisons who
couldn’t handle them due to their violent behavior.
And because of those violent tendencies, ADX Florence have developed a reputation for being one of
the harshest prisons on earth. Here, inmates are kept in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day. And
the single hour they are allowed out is into a bigger cell with vaulted ceilings called the “empty
swimming pool.” This room has a 4-inch by 4-foot skylight as the only window and was designed to
prevent the prisoners from knowing where they are, and they still spend this time alone.

Number 7. La Sante Prison
You know that you’re in a bad place when you get so depressed or insane that you begin swallowing
drain cleaner and rat poison to escape. With 124 suicides just in 1999 alone, La Sante has remained a
place of violence, depravity and brutality, where the weaker inmates are often turned into slaves.
Speaking of inmates, they only spend four hours a day outside of their cells and even those who have
prison jobs usually work in their cells, which are 30 square feet with just tiny peepholes in the solid
metal doors. And the abuse doesn’t stop there.
