Getting a bit of adrenaline pumping is always a welcome experience for a lot of people. And roller coasters offer just that.
But for some, the thrill here is just not enough. They crave for more. Their idea of thrilling is about stunts that push the lengths of safety so that a simple slip up means ultimate death.
In today's video, we take you through the top 10 of the most daring and dangerous stunts to be ever performed. Roller coasters are a child’s play here.
Here we go.
#10 Jumping From The Stratosphere
In the world of stunts, Felix Baumgartner is a name that will always be mentioned. The Austrian BASE jumper, skydiver, and daredevil has a career riddled with a fair share of hair-raising performances.
But the most popular is the one he came down from the stratosphere. That was under the Red Bull Stratos project, sponsored of course by the energy drink brand, Red Bull. Preparations for the project started in January 2010 and several tests were carried out between March 2012 and July of the same year. The record-breaking jump itself took place on 9 October 2012.
In the jump, Mr. Baumgartner went into the stratosphere via helium balloon and tumbled back to earth’s surface in a free fall.
By the time he touched the ground, Felix had shattered several records. He broke the skydiving records for vertical freefall with a drogue parachute, exit altitude, and vertical speed without a drogue parachute.
To this day, he still holds the records for both vertical freefall with a drogue parachute and vertical speed without a drogue parachute. His 39-km exit altitude record was broken in 2014 by Alan Eustace who jumped from 41.42 kilometers.
Nevertheless, Felix is the first human to break the sound barrier outside a vehicle.
#9 The Burj Khalifa Free Climb
Scaling high walls is a reserve for superheroes in works of fiction, most notably the Spider-man – and rightly so. There is quite a considerable level of risk involved.
But did you know there is a real-life Spider-man? Well, he may not do exactly as you'd expect but he's close enough – that's the French man Alain Robert. The “Human Spider” as he’s sometimes referred to, has all the attention he can get in the world all thanks to his gutsy free solo climbing. In his stunts, he usually scales the highest skyscrapers without any specialized equipment.
To conquer the giant man-made landmarks, Robert depends only on a pair of climbing shoes and a small bag of chalk tied around his waist.
The tall buildings he has scaled are as many as you're willing to count. Think of a popular skyscraper you know of. Chances are that Mr. Robert has already conquered it.
On 28 March 2011, he set a new record by climbing the Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai. Standing at a height of 828 meters, the tower is the tallest building in the world and yet the “Human Spider” scaled in about six hours.
Contrary to his mode of operation though, he used a harness this time as part of the safety procedure.
#8 The Twin Towers High-Wire Walk
Philippe Petit is another daredevil French. His specialty? Walking on a tightrope. Though always being a performer since his teen years, he shot to world prominence when he did his performance between the famed Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.
At that time – in 1974 – the Towers had just been built and didn't hold as much significance as they do today. And, also interesting is that Philippe hatched his plan way before even the World Trade Center was built. He recounts reading the proposed project in a newspaper at a dentist’s office and immediately got the urge to stage a show between the towers.
He got down to work reading as much as he could about the towers. Together with his crew, they carried out covert operations setting up everything they needed for the big day. And they had a lot to look into – especially the fact that the towers had been designed to swing and the weather conditions like wind at a height of over 400 meters.
But they figured it all out and come the material day, Petit stepped out onto the high-wire and gave a 45-minute performance to the onlookers who had gathered below.
