10 most embarrassing and funny moments in sports
We might not remember some important details of our lives, miss birthdays, special moments but somehow have the exact recollection of what we were doing when we watch something momentous. There is something about such moments, their magic, the aura, the sheer abundance of awesomeness.
Or the complete opposite!
It goes both ways.
For every Hand of God, we have the Battle of Bridge. There is a hint of irony in these moments, and even though they are embarrassing, there is an element of amusement about them. We have gathered on such list for you guys. Here are the top 10 most embarrassing and funny moments in sports.
10. Pierre - Yves Winkintries to score in his own net

We do not expect lower level players to play like the pros, but we expect them to be familiar with the basic rules of the game. But sometimes, teams are not as lucky. Some players look good on the ball but forget the rules and freeze in the moment. And this is why Pierre-Yves (Pierre Eve) Winkin makes our list. In the fifth level of Belgian basketball, Pierre got his infamy. After the opponent had missed his free throw, Yves thought it was his moment to shine.
The number 12 attempted one layup. And then another. And another. And then another. Four times he attempted, and four times he failed to pocket the ball in his own basket. He must have had some kind of memory loss or a brain fade. Even when you watch it for the first time, you take a couple of replays what exactly happened.
When this was happening, his teammates were caught in a similar mindset. Surely, he must be joking. But it was his persistence that led them to realize that Yves was indeed trying to score in their own basket. Thankfully he doesn’t and this is what adds insult to injury. Our Yves cannot even basket without pressure from anyone. Something must have been off that day for him, he should not have been on the court that day.
9. Battle of Nuremberg: Netherlands vs Portugal
For a game that finished 2-1, it should not be worth remembering. But think about the 2006 FIFA World Cup and this game will come to your mind. It is just as iconic as Cristiano Ronaldo’s wink after getting Wayne Rooney sent off. But this game comes in the realm of farcical embarrassment and fans only remember for its comical value. This Netherlands side exhibited no form or function of the Johan Cruyff’s Total Football side, this Dutch side was out for blood.
Because, in no serious game would you see a referee dish out cautions like and sent off players every five minutes. Russian referee, Valentin Ivanov, could not have anticipated what he witnessed as he showeda total 16 yellow cards and 4 red cards. If you want a historical account, it will not serve you any good. The game is probably best remembered for the amount of time Ivanov spent bickering with players, the huge number of stoppages and the very little time of activity. It became funny how there wasn’t an actual brawl but the referee and his assistants were equally powerless in changing the direction of the game.
It was funny to watch Ivanov perplexed about this world cup knockout encounter. But the game left you more dumbfounded that this actually happened at the grandest stage of world football with more than half of the world in attendance.
8. Comedy of errors – Australian cricketers forget basics
Aakash Chopra is a well-respected cricket pundit and analyst. People tune in to watch what he has to say. He has a great gig with ESPN as well and he regularly writes for them as well. But when he was playing, no one cared who he was. Chopra was just one of the many batsmen coming through India’s production line. On the other hand, Virender Sehwag was a hart hitting batsman who would put fear in the opposition’s hearts.
But, and there’s always a but. Australia are a formidable side and they are not influenced by anyone. But not in 2004. The Aussies gave the worst account of fielding at professional level during the 2004 Melbourne test. Even Pakistan cricket will be proud of saying holding their heads high at not committing this blunder. So, what transpired next was truly a comedy of errors. Sehwag is outside his crease but Brett Lee misses the stumps. Adam Gilchrist catches the ball and tries his luck, he is the wicketkeeper, he should hit the target. he misses too.
All the while, no one is paying attention to Chopra, who has been out from the first moment. In the end, both batsmen managed to keep their wickets. They should have lost it, both of them could have made their way to the pavilion but the Australians’ strange thinking hurt them.
