A fear of the dark is as natural and as common as breathing in the human race. When you’re a kid, especially, there’s nothing scarier than when the night time takes the dark away and you’re expected to be completely alone in your bedroom with no lights to keep you safe. But why is the human race so terrified about what may be lurking in the shadows? Well, in todays video we might just find out, as we cover the top 10 reasons to fear the dark!

BUT HEY! Before you get pounced on by the nocturnal predators lurking in the shadows of the night, why not become one of the FactFam by liking this video, subscribing to the channel and clicking that all-important bell button!

Oh, and don’t forget to stick around so you can find out more about todays top pick!

10. Nocturnal Animals

One of the biggest and most obvious reasons that you should probably be a little bit wary of going out into the night is all the animals that only come out after the sun has dipped below the horizon. Even in boring countries like the UK there are nocturnal predators that could do some serious damage to a person if they were given the opportunity.

In the UK we have creatures like the Badger. The European Badger is one of the largest in the world, and can be very territorial if you go anywhere near their setts. There are other places with much more dangerous nocturnal animals, though. Animals like the Hyena, the Jaguar and most species of Tiger are all nocturnal. If you lived in places where these animals lived then you would have a very obvious reason to fear the dark, you would never know if you would be coming back out again!

9.The Polar Night

In most places, the day-night cycle is simple to understand. Sure, sometimes the clocks change for daylight savings time, and the sun never sets or rises at the exact time every single day, but you have a general idea of what you’re going to experience every day. In the northern and southernmost regions of the world, not everyone has that luxury.

These are places that experience the Polar Night, places where the sun goes down and then doesn’t come back up again for longer than 24 hours. At each pole a single night can last for up to 179 days, not accounting for night refraction. But that’s at the poles, where bar researchers pretty much no humans exist. Are there any cities that have these conditions? Well, the answer is yes. In the northernmost city of Sweden, Kiruna, the polar night lasts for around 22 days. Between the 11th of December to the 1st of January, the sun will not rise in this city.

In a city where, at winter, daylight is a rare and valuable commodity, it makes sense that people may have a distinct feeling of foreboding when the sun sets and darkness comes in throughout the rest of the year.

7.Sleep Walking

On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, we have sleepwalking. As you would expect by the name of the condition, sleepwalking is a disorder that results in people walking around while they are in deep sleep. It’s more common in kids than it is in adults, and is also more likely to occur if the person is sleep deprived. Normally, sleepwalking actually involves much more than just walking around. It can include a variety of more complex actions, with some people having been reported to have even driven long distances while they are sleepwalking.

I think the reason for fearing the dark is quite obvious for a sleepwalker. Imagine you’ve just settled down for a nice night of sleep, you drift off, and then all of a sudden you wake up in a dark place that you don’t immediately recognise. Sure, you might have just walked into your kitchen or the back yard, but for a moment the fear of not being in your bed anymore would be all-consuming, especially if you’re one of those rare sleep driving cases.
