10 SIMPLE IDEAS & ACTIVITIES TO DO WITH YOUR BABY OR TODDLER (8MONTHS–2YEARS) | SARA MEER
Description
I’m back with a new video! As you guys have been asking me about activities for your 15 months old or your 2 years old. So, today’s video is a mixture of activities for 8 months - 2 years old. These activities are not just fun but it promotes many learning and development areas.
1. Pulling PipeCleaners
The first activity is a popular idea for babies. All you need is a strainer and some pipecleaners. Just thread them into the holes and let your baby pull them. And to make it a little challenging, you can bend the pipecleaners. This activity will develop your baby’s fine motor skills, build hands and fingers muscles and it will also perfect the pincer grip.
2. Sensory Bottles
For this activity all you need is empty water bottles. In one bottle I added some rice, some pipecleaners and some colorful buttons. And in the other I added some beans, chickpeas and pom poms. This activity is great to develop your baby’s visual tracking skills.
3. Mess Free Painting
So, this next activity is a super fun. As you can't give regular paint to little ones so this is a fun way to paint without getting their hands messy. For this you will need a ziplock bag, an A4 size paper trimmed according to the size of ziplock bag and some paints of different colors. Just put it on the floor or carpet and let your baby press on the paint with their fingers and watch it move and merge. This activity is great to develop their fine motor skills.
4. Pulling Ribbons
On number 4, we have a colorful activity. For this you will need a cardboard piece, some colorful ribbons and a cutter. Make some cuts in the cardboard and push the ribbons through and tie a knot on both sides. Babies just love to pull things so why not use this opportunity to make an activity that will develop their fine motor skills and pincer grip.
5. Sensory Bags
Our next activity is another sensory activity. For this you will need a ziplock bag. Then you need colored water. You can use glitter, confetti to grab your kid’s attention. Make sure it’s not sharp, otherwise the water might leak through the holes. This activity is really good for visual tracking skills and attention span.
6. Moon Sand
For this activity you will need 4 cups of flour and half a cup of baby oil. Just mix all of it and let your baby enjoy the texture. So, this activity can be done with 8 months – 2 years old. You can even add toy cars and animal toys for more fun. With this activity babies will develop their balance and strengthening of their shoulders and arms.
7. Discovery Basket
Another idea to entertain Ziyad is this discovery basket. All I do is collect random things from around the house and pop it in the basket. We have a new sponge, a rubber ice cube tray, a scoop, a lid, a rubber ruler etc. And just let them explore.
8. Fine Motor Skills Containers
This is my favorite activity. It’s best for ages 12 months – 2 years I think. So for this activity you will need some food containers. I used Ziyad’s formula tins and cerelac tins. The first one is a straw game. Next is a Popsicle game. Then we have the famous pom pom drop game. This is good for hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills and wrist rotation practice. And lastly, we have the ball drop game.
Another alternative for very young babies is put a basket in the middle and spread some toys around it and let your baby drop the toys inside the basket. This will help them to develop the skills like grasping, hand eye coordination, crossing the mid-line, make shift and balance.
9. Spider Web Basket
Our second last activity is a really interesting activity. This activity will develop problem solving skills, hand eye coordination and rotation skill in your baby. For this activity you will need a basket with small holes in it, some toys and something to thread the top of the basket with. You can use yarn or thin rope.
10. Roll the ball
Our final activity is roll the ball. This is a classic activity. Just sit on the floor and keep rolling the ball. It’s for all ages 8 months-2 years old. You can also build vocabulary with this game. Every time the baby rolls the ball towards you, say a new word. Or you can also teach numbers.
