The concepts of bodybuilding, power lifting and weight lifting are not new, and men have been
competing to prove that they are the strongest and most alpha for centuries. But with so many ways to
measure strength, how do we know which men on the planet are the most powerful? Don’t worry, we’ve
done the heavy lifting for you so keep watching to see our countdown of the 10 strongest men in the
world.
10) Jon Pall Sigmarsson
Starting off our countdown at number 10 is a man who has won the coveted title of the world’s
strongest man not once, not twice but FOUR times, in addition to placing second and third
once each. Icelandic man Jon Pall Sigmarsson started his strongman journey by playing glima
– a type of wrestling native to his home country. He also partook in soccer, swimming, running
and handball before turning his sights to being the world’s strongest man. Over the years,
Sigmarsson became world muscle power champion 5 times, earned the Scandinavian Viking
title and came first in multiple Mr Iceland physique competitions. Many experts believe that the
number of global strongman events that he has won over the years may never be matched!
Sadly however, Sigmarsson’s journey ends in tragedy as he passed away from a heart attack
aged 32 years old while doing heavy deadlifts in the gym. At least he died doing what he loved.
9) Devon Larratt
Up next is a man that really can do it all. Devon Larratt has experience in many areas, from
farm laboring to working in Canada’s oil fields to serving on the Canadian military as part of the
special forces. His time in these careers taught him the discipline and knowledge to help
harness his size and strength. Larratt began competing in world arm wrestling championships
and soon became champion, we have no doubt his height helped – with him towering above
his other competitors at over 6ft 5 inches. Devon also has another hobby to help show his
strengths – catching giant fish. And by giant, we mean GIANT – measuring at up to 2.5m long
and weighing up to 360kg. Of course, one of the strongest men in the world has to catch one
of the strongest fish in the ocean.
8) Robert Oberst
The man in our number 8 position is rumored to have the strongest shoulders in the whole
world and has proven it by holding the American record in the log lift. Known for his signature
beard, Robert Oberst began his career in the NFL before becoming a bouncer. Standing at a
staggering 6ft and 8 inches he first tried to compete in an amateur log contest just for fun and
ending up being so good that he broke records on his first ever attempt! Continuing with his
strength training, he competed in the World’s strongest man competition five times and was a
finalist twice. As of 2013 he was also an unbeaten champion nationally in MAS wrestling – we
wouldn’t want to mess with this guy.
7) Leonid Taranenko
Our number seven competitor is the only Olympic winning medalist on our list and what an
honor that is. Leonid Taranenko holds Olympic, World and European titles and was a leader in
heavyweight lifting from a very young age. Taranenko broke the world record in 1984 when he
lifted 442.2 kg in weight, with this record being unbeaten for a very long time. He was
European champion in both 1991 and 1996 and won the super heavyweight world
championship too – wow does this man have any room left in his trophy cabinet?!
6) Constantine Ganesha
28-year-old Constantine Ganesha is the only Georgian athlete on our list and in fact holds the
record as the first Georgian athlete to reach the coveted World’s Strongest Man final.
Nicknamed the Georgian Bull, Constantine is 375 pounds and stretches to 6 foot 5 in height.
Ganesha was a former rugby plater that developed both strength and mobility while practicing
the sport before focusing on weight lifting and training at the famous Henry Skybus gym in
2015 and 2016. It is clear that his hard work paid off as he has won the European Arnold
Classic, competed in the World Championships, Strongman Events and the super cool Viking
Apocalypse in Denmark. And let us tell you this, if you walked past Constantine Ganesha in
the street, you would certainly notice him. He is a striking looking strongman who is known for
both his huge traps at his impressive tattoos. Across his chest, the Georgian has his nickname
Georgian Bull tattooed across his chest and also has a large tattoo showing off his
achievements. Can you believe that he actually has the words ‘World’s Strongest Man’
tattooed on him!? Talk about showing off!
