Considering the multitude of shades that we encounter in the animal world, it may be an unsettling yet
exciting sight to see a completely white animal. Albino creatures, as well as uncommon all-white
species, are the same as any other breed, but with a coloring that renders them (sometimes literally)
one in a million. And it is not just a few animals, you can find albinos in the sea, in the air, and on the
land too!
Albinism is a concept which encompasses a number of genetic pigmentation disorders. Many albinism-
bearing animals are born with white or pink skin and fur, though some (not all) have reddish or violet
eyes too. Animal albinism is often linked with blurred vision and a greater sensitivity to skin cancers.
Also, the white fur might seem super cool, but it actually makes the animal pop out of their
environments more, thus more visible to predators. And if these unusual animals might blend in
perfectly around ever-wintery landscapes, it is so much harder for the ones living in the jungle. So while
the beauty of white animals knows no bounds, it does come with some serious disadvantages.

10. Ghost Moose
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9WnLz26Bwc)
No, it isn’t a ghost of a Christmas past. The moose is the world’s largest deer, and it can be very
dangerous to humans. Normally, this ungulate blends in by having a very dark coat that makes it next to
invisible among the dark timbers of its forest home. However, this rare albino blends in perfectly with
his snow-blanketed forest home in northern Ontario, Canada.
However, once the snow melts, this albino is unfortunately much more visible to its nemesis, the wolf.
For a northern mammal, one disadvantage of albinism, with its associated increase in ocular sensitivity,
is the sheer intensity of the sun glaring off the snow.
Want to see one for yourself? We know just the place. Head on out to Alaska and you might be able to
see one of these magnificent beasts in flesh. Also, guests at the Alaska Garden Bed and Breakfast on the
outskirts of Fairbanks have regularly spotted a white cow moose with a regular brown calf in tow.
However, it is not just Alaska, almost any part of Canada that has the regular moose has reported
sightings of the ‘Ghost Moose’.
9. Albino Hummingbird

An albino hummingbird features white feathers along with pink eyes, bill and feet. These hummingbirds
are very rare, and are the result of a genetic mutation that stops the creation of any dark pigment.
Consider this, for bird enthusiasts, spotting one of these is like spotting a unicorn!
The albino ruby-throated hummingbird, native to eastern North America, garnered significant media
attention after it was spotted in a garden in Virginia. Many albinos are either ostracized or hunted down
by predators, but this solitary speedster is a loner anyway and probably too fast for most predators to
catch.
Normally, hummingbirds sport structural colors and a vast array of pigments that make them resemble
living emeralds, but this bird’s lack of a ruby throat is offset by its red eyes.
The ruby-throated hummingbird can migrate nonstop across the Gulf of Mexico, relying on its extensive
energy reserves.
8. Great White Whale

Well, if we told you that captain Ahab wasn’t completely nuts and there actually are white whales out
there, would you believe?
It shouldn’t be surprising since albinism can impact any animal species, including humans, so why
wouldn’t it effect a whale? However, it is a very rare occurrence and only a few recorded sightings have
ever taken place.
A massive, 14-meter long albino humpback whale, one of the larger baleen whale species, was first
sighted off the coast of Queensland, Australia in 1991. Years later, a humpback whale calf was seen on a
popular migration route that sees around 15,000 whales each year. Albino whales may be more
sensitive to light at the surface and more susceptible to predation.
In an equally odd twist, an albino orca was filmed off the coast of Russia in 2012.
