A significant flash flood event occurred across portions of the Birmingham metro area on Monday afternoon. Vehicles were submerged near I-65 at University Boulevard in downtown areas of Birmingham. Homes and vehicles were also flooded along Valley Creek during the evening along 16th street and 22nd Avenue in Bessemer just off of I-20/59. Home owners were asked by local fire to evacuate the area as Valley creek could continue to rise into the overnight with more rain swelling many streams and creeks in the region. I-459 and US-280 were slick as heavy rainfall continued into the night time hours.
Other local areas near Childersburg were flooding during the overnight with water come up out of roadways from manhole covers. Several areas are still flooded after rainfall totals of 4-8 inches fell across the region.
A flood watch remains in place until 6PM Tuesday as more rain can be expected.
