5 Memorable Moments From Rally Mexico | WRC 2020

For over 40 years Rally Mexico has been providing plenty of highlights. Here are five of the most unforgettable moments.

Sebastien Loeb is the undisputed master of Mexico, but it didn’t always come easy. In 2005 damper failure meant his Citroen suspension was ripped apart leading to the loss of a rear wheel. Co-Driver Daniel Elena had an ingenious way to take the weight off the missing wheel, but making their way back to the service area on public roads local police weren’t so impressed with Elena’s problem-solving. After an intense debate with the local police, Elena’s diplomacy skills won through and the pair had a police escort back to service. The Citroen was repaired and Loeb finished just off the podium.

In 2014 Thierry Neuville went above and beyond when it comes to product placement using Rally Mexico sponsor’s beer to top up his failing radiator. The coolant meant he could get back to service for repair and helped secure a first podium for Hyundai.

Petter Solberg escaped major damage following a close encounter with a wall in 2004, however later suffered a flat battery approaching time control. With his car powerless facing a ramp to the finish, fans raced over to help their stranded hero push the car back into service but he had to take a five minute time penalty on the chin for outside assistance.

Ott Tanak had an incredible escape in 2015 when his M-Sport Ford Fiesta flew off the road and into a stage-side lake. Tanak and co-driver Raigo Moelder were able to exit the car and swim to safety before it sank to the bottom. Ten hours later the Fiesta was winched out. M-Sport mechanics were able to rebuild the wreck in less than three hours so Tanak could get back on the road.

And who could forget Kris Meeke’s impromtu detour in 2017, just meters from the finish line. A bump in the final jump caught him out and sent his Citroen C3 off the road through bushes and into the car park. After some donuts round parked cars they were able to rejoin the stage and cross the finish line - taking the win with just seconds to spare. The most extraordinary win in the history of Rally Mexico.
