A Look at the St Louis Cardinals and Their Player Development | Stat Stories
Description
The St Louis Cardinals have a knack for turning unheralded prospects into Major League contributors. Some call it the Cardinal Way. Others call it Devil Magic.
In this video, I look at the players who went under the radar in the draft such as Matt Carpenter, Allen Craig, and Matt Adams. These players, along with a handful of others, not only were drafted after the first two rounds, but never attained top prospect status while in the minor leagues.
Cardinals' GM Mike Girsch has mentioned that the team used college statistics more heavily than other teams 10-15 years ago, which is when these players were drafted. So I looked at their college stats to see if there were any similarities between them. And as it turns out, strikeout and walk rates were a major factor. These stats can be considered part of a player's mental makeup, which I examined when discussing the sixth tool of baseball.
Whether you call the Cardinals' success with player development the Cardinal Way or a case of Devil's Magic, you can't deny it's been successful.
