Alaska city ends some virus business restrictions
Description
(28 Apr 2020) The first signs of activity post the coronavirus returned to Alaska's largest city Monday as businesses slowly began reopening to customers.
Alaska officials allowed businesses to begin reopening elsewhere around the state last Friday, but Anchorage took a slower approach, allowing some to reopen Monday under specific guidelines aimed at preventing additional spread of the virus.
But don't expect the hustle-and-bustle that Anchorage exhibited in February, or even in November before winter set in.
Instead, only a few businesses like beauty shops and nail salons were allowed to open, and all restaurants _ from mom and pop diners to the swankiest eateries at the top of downtown hotels _ will require reservations.
And every place from the neighborhood greasy spoon on up will likely have a waiting list. Regulations are limiting every restaurant to 25 percent capacity, with more than enough elbow room. Tables have to be spaced 10 feet apart, and eateries will continue offering take-out service, like many have since businesses were closed.
Restaurants will also have to do a little paperwork on their customers.
A log with every customer's first and last name and contact phone number must be maintained by the restaurant and kept for 30 days in case it's needed for contact tracing.
All employees must wear fabric face masks, and customers are encouraged to wear them unless eating.
Only one customer per stylist or technician will be allowed in, and all workstations must be 10 feet apart. Every stylist must wear a surgical mask, which cannot be reused, and customers must wear cloth face coverings.
