They went extinct because of human hunting about a few years ago. Another one is the famous giant tortoise. They lived in a lonely island of hawaii. When human ships boarded their for the first time, these tortoises were very happily living there. But soon the nightmare came and the humans begun to hunt all the tortoises and eventually made them go extinct.
