European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is 'deeply concerned' over the Polish court's ruling against EU law primacy, EC's spokesperson Erik Mamer told the press in Brussels on Friday.
The ruling announced on Thursday states that Polish law can take precedence over EU law.
The judges decided in a majority voting that Warsaw holds legal authority above Brussels despite the country’s EU membership.
According to Mamer, von der Leyen said, “I am deeply concerned by yesterday's ruling of the Polish Constitutional Tribunal. I have instructed the Commission's services to analyse it thoroughly and swiftly.”
“The EU is a community of values and laws. This is what binds our union together and makes us strong. We will uphold the founding principles of our union's legal order. Our 450 million Europeans rely on this,” Mamer added.
The EC President emphasised that EU membership includes the acceptance of EU law primacy and abiding by the rulings of the European Court of Justice.
In September the EU Commission requested the European Court of Justice to impose fines on Poland over, what the EC believes, is non-compliance to rulings in a dispute over the country’s judicial system.
