Gajalee is perhaps Mumbai’s most popular seafood destination. When here, its fresh seafood offerings, from the signature stuffed bombil fry, prawns koliwada, plain bombil fry, rawas curry to the splurge worthy tandoori crab are a ritual for many of its regulars. I make the most of a quick visit to Mumbai to catch an indulgent seafood feast here and film this GOTR Raw episode. Enjoy!
PRAWNS KOLIWADA
These sea prawns are fresh, well seasoned and encrusted in a crunch rice flour batter. Smother it with the ginger garlic chutney if you like it spicy.
Rs. 425 (USD 5.6)

STUFFED BOMBIL FRY
If you were to try only one dish at Gajalee, this would be it. The delicate, watery bombay duck is rolled around a spicy shrimp mixture, dipped in a batter and fried. The fish retains its moistness despite being fried and the shrimp adds flavour.
Rs. 400 (USD 5.3)

Bombil Fry
The Bombay Duck is simply seasoned, dredged through a rice batter and fried. Yet another dish to try here. You can quite literally taste the ocean in this preparation.
Rs. 325 (USD 4.3)

TANDOORI CRAB
It’s a bit of a splurge, but you definitely get the ‘meatiest’ bang for your buck! The crab was fresh and plump in its meat. I was worried that the tandoori masala would overpower the flavour of the crab, but that wasn’t the case. You could taste the sweetness in the flesh, and the gentle edge of the tandoori marinade.
Rs. 2957 (USD 39)for a one kilo crab
10/10
Rawas Curry
A creamy Malwan style curry, flavoured with the sour twang of kokum. The rawas or Indian salmon was soft and had absorbed the flavour of the curry. Best eaten with the ghavne, lacy pancakes made with a runny rice batter.
Rs. 425 (USD 5.7)
