Sample questions and the explanation for them are given for each concepts from the Chapter 9 - Applications of Trigonometry.

Concept |
1. The line of sight is the line drawn from the eye of an observer to the point in the object viewed by the observer.
2. The angle of elevation of an object viewed, is the angle formed by the line of sight with the horizontal when it is above the horizontal level, i.e., the case when we raise our head to look at the object.
3. The angle of depression of an object viewed, is the angle formed by the line of sight with the horizontal when it is below the horizontal level, i.e., the case when we lower our head to look at the object.

Question 1: The angle of elevation of the top of a tower 30 m high, from two points on the level ground on its opposite sides are 45° and 60°. What is the distance between the two points?

Question 2: A man standing at point A, is able to see the top of a light house 60 m high, at an angle of 30°. He moves a certain distance towards the light house and reaches point B. He is now able to see the top of the light house at an angle of elevation of 45°. What is the distance between the two points?

Question 3: Two pillars of equal height stand on either side of a 100 m wide road. At a point on the road, between the pillars, the elevation to the tops of pillars are 60° and 30°. Find the height of the pillars.

Question 4: The distance between two towers is 60 m. The angular depression of the top of the first tower, as seen from the top of the second tower is 30°. If the second tower is 150 m tall, find the height of the first tower.

Question 5: A man on the top of an observation tower 60 m high, observes a car moving at a uniform speed going away from it. If it takes 12 minutes for the angle of depression to change from 45° to 30°, how long will the car take to reach this point from the tower?
