With international pop stars Rihanna and climate activists Greta Thunberg jumping into the fray, the farmers' protest now finds itself on the global stage. While the Government of India has offered to put the three contentious farm laws on hold for 12-18 months, the Opposition has suggested that the legislation be referred to a Parliamentary select committee. The protesting farmers, however, remain adamant on their demand for legal guarantees for MSP along with the repeal of the three farm laws.

On the other hand, MPs in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha discussed on Thursday the Motion of Thanks to the President for his joint address to Parliament. The discussion was marred by veiled and even explicit references to the farmers' agitation with the Centre reiterating its stand and the Opposition assailing it tooth and nail.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, BJP MP from Madhya Pradesh Jyotiraditya Scindia praised the government's handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. Referring to the farmers' protest, Scindia went on to say, "Opposition parties will have to change their habit of going back on their words." But thousands of farmers, mostly from Punjab, Haryana have been camping on Delhi's borders demanding the complete withdrawal of the Centre's three farm laws and legal guarantees for MSP. As many as 11 rounds of talks between the farmers' union comprising of representatives from at least farmers' outfits and the central government have failed to end the deadlock.
