China's exports of goods rebounded in April, adding to signs that the country's foreign trade is stabilizing amid further containment of COVID-19.

The country's exports rose 8.2 percent year on year to 1.41 trillion yuan (about 198.8 billion U.S. dollars) in April, compared with a drop of 11.4-percent in the first quarter, the General Administration of Customs (GAC) said Thursday.
Imports fell 10.2 percent to 1.09 trillion yuan last month, resulting in a trade surplus of 318.15 billion yuan.
Foreign trade of goods inched down 0.7 percent year on year in April to 2.5 trillion yuan, narrowing from a drop of 6.4-percent in Q1.
In the first four months, the foreign trade of goods totaled 9.07 trillion yuan, down 4.9 percent year on year.

The rebound in exports showed the strong resilience of China's economy and robust external demand for China-manufactured goods, said Zhuang Rui, vice head of the Institute of International Economy at the University of International Business and Economics.
According to the International Monetary Fund, India will be the large economy worst hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. The Fund now says that Indian GDP in the ongoing financial year, which began in March 2020, will contract by 4.5%. Just a few weeks ago, it had been predicting 2% growth for the year.

The US economy shed 701,000 jobs in March amid the damage inflicted by the coronavirus shutdowns, while the unemployment rate surged to 4.4 percent, the Labor Department reported Friday.

China had exported over 3 million face masks, nearly 40 million protective gear, more than 2 million testing kits and at least 16,000 ventilators to other countries.
The overall China exports decreased 3.3% in dollar terms from a year earlier, beating economists’ estimates, while imports plunged 16.7%. That resulted in a trade surplus of $62.93 billion.
