Description

While the coronavirus crisis can “make a leader, it can also break a leader,” there are already five examples of the Morrison government mishandling the crisis says Sky News host Sharri Markson.

On Sunday the prime minister announced a series of measures which are aimed at mitigating the spread of the virus including a “self-isolation requirement” for all international arrivals to Australia, the banning of cruise ships from docking in the country for 30 days, and stricter social distancing measures.

Ms Markson said the prime minister’s press conference was “what we’ve been waiting for,” an example of “tough measures that can give us confidence that all is being done to slow the transmission”.

There are though “five things the Morrison government has already mishandled” during this crisis which include the tardiness of the travel bans and self-isolation, not enough testing kits, and an “ill-equipped and under-funded hospital system”.

Ms Markson said the decision to allow people into Australia from the US and Europe without quarantine, forced isolation, nor proper screening measures is “reckless and irresponsible”.

“There's the state of our hospitals (which) is a blight on both state and federal governments,” she said.

“We should have invested more in our health system; more beds, more doctors and more medical equipment.

“We need our Government to be on top of this, ahead of this, so our "curve" can be like Hong Kong and Singapore.”
