Coronavirus focus of 1st White House press briefing in over a year | FULL
Description
White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany held the first formal press briefing of her tenure, as well as the first in over a year, to respond to questions the Trump administration is facing over various issues, including the coronavirus response.
McEnany started the briefing by announcing the administration would be distributing $12 billion in relief funds to 395 hospitals across the country, saying these hospitals have cared for more than 70 per cent of the Americans who required hospital care due to COVID-19. She said $10 billion will go to hospitals treating 100 or more COVID-19 admissions.
Asked about China reportedly blocking World Health Organization (WHO) investigators from entering the country, McEnany said the WHO “appears to have a very clear China bias,” and given the amount of funding the U.S. had been providing to WHO, it was unacceptable that the organization’s officials opposed U.S. travel restrictions, in the view of the Trump administration.
The new press secretary also faced questions on the lack of coronavirus task force briefings recently, after weeks of daily updates, and whether Dr. Deborah Birx and Dr. Anthony Fauci, the White House's top officials on the task force, would be part of another briefing in the coming days. McEnany said that coronavirus task force meetings were still taking place, but as the country is moving more towards reopening, there’s been more public meetings and press conferences with Trump and CEOs, for example.
She also spoke about the case of former national security advisor Michael Flynn and recent new documents that showed how FBI agents debated how to handle the January 2017 interview with Flynn as part of then-special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. She said the documents, one of which showed an agent asked whether the FBI’s goal was to get Flynn “to lie, so we can prosecute him or get him fired,” show a case of injustice that should concern Americans.
