For the past few years in the NFL, there have been well over 200 diagnosed concussions per season. And in a single season, it’s estimated that 10% of college football players sustain brain injuries.
These alarming stats threaten to derail America’s favorite sport. But one coach has found an innovative solution for how to prevent concussions in football – a robotic tackling dummy.
Enter the Mobile Virtual Player that originated at Dartmouth College. Designed to increase practice safety, the tackling dummy weighs 160 pounds, turns on a zero radius for maximum agility, and can “sprint” down the field at 16 miles per hour.
It’s also programmed to turn off automatically when tackled, to further increase safety. Using the MVP tackle dummy, Dartmouth’s overall injury rate dropped 80% in the first year. And since 2014, the Dartmouth football team has the best Ivy League winning record.
