Del Valle HS honors its Regional Teacher of the Year, Mr. Ramon Benavides

Science teacher Ramon Benavides, was selected from among 13 of the region’s top educators to win 2021-22 ESC Region 19 Secondary Teacher of the Year at a ceremony this past weekend.

Benavides, who has worked for 11 years at Ysleta ISD and El Paso Community College, was selected as Ysleta ISD’s Secondary Teacher of the Year in the spring and advanced to the Region 19 competition. As the regional winner, Benavides now goes on to compete for Texas Secondary Teacher of the Year this fall.

The son of migrant farmworkers who dropped out of school at a young age, Benavides pursued a career in education after seeing his parents not only return to school, but eventually become teachers. He holds bachelor’s degrees from both UT San Antonio and UT Brownsville, a master’s degree from UTEP, and is earning a doctorate in educational leadership from Texas Tech University.
