Description

Well, it's been 7 months. How did my buried Pela Case turn out?

It surprisingly looks like it's coming apart!

Now Pela did reach out to me after the first review and the owner person said that they’ve updated all their website verbiage to say you need to use industrial composting to break the case down. Which is why I say there’s a good chance that nothing is going to happen.

Pela really wanted me to send the case I’m about to dig up to them so that they can compost it properly. BUT I’m not an influencer, my time isn’t bought, I value my time and effort so if I spent my time and money to see if a product lives up to this hype, you know I’m going to go through with it.

Now compostable environmentally friendly cases is a coming fad. Lots of companies are coming out with environmental friendly cases. Made from recycled plastic. Ones that are compostable. Draped with feel-good names like Organi-core. That look oddly familiar to the Pelacase.

BUT at the end of day, when it comes to our iPhones, the biggest environmental culprit is the actual device. Rare earth metals are super environmentally friendly right? If you want to feel good about your smartphone usage. Fight the urge to get a new device. Use the one you have now until it physically fails. And even then, you could probably find a 3rd party repair person who has parts for whatever broke. And if that fails, buy a 2nd hand device.

BUT because our society is based on rampant consumption, some of us environmentally minded folks still want the shiny new device so if you feel like you can justify getting a new device, go with the simpler device. Less features = less non-renewable resources used.

Because getting an environmentally friendly case in the whole smartphone lifecycle is equivalent to:

-saying your are being healthy by not eating the ketchup that came with your deep-fried fish and chips

Even with the Pela case, approx~50% of the case is still a form of plastic. It still get’s shipped from someplace using fossil fuels. The cases still get manufactured in a place with questionable environmental standards.

If you’ve totally bought into green-washing, you should be watching this video on and older device which already has a case because here’s a secret, a case that’s already been made is going to be better than the environment than any case that hasn’t been made yet. Why? Because you’re delaying a product from entering the landfill.

Now I will admit, I am being fairly negative. But I’m a reviewer. By default, I lean heavily towards the opposite of whatever the marketing fluff says.

If the marketing fluff is largely based on unicorn farts and Cotton candy I’m going to hit back with a pile of Monty poop and legumes.

Again, I’m here to make sure you don’t waste your money on bad products. That’s the best thing I can do for the environment.

Now I appreciate the effort Pela is making. The more they can make their products with environmentally friendly products, the better. But I see their efforts as trying to put out a house fire with a glass of water. But their glass of water is bigger than other companies who are just trying to capitalize on this trend.
