Drills, Quizzes & Tests, Do They Help You Learn Languages?

I don't like doing drills, quizzes or answering questions. But do they help?

These kids of activities are a mainstay of language books. I avoid them, always. I had them for years in school for French and couldn't say much. Only once I engaged with enjoyable meaningful content did I learn to speak properly.
