East Africa is a region encompassing the eastern portion of the African continent. Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Comoros, Mauritius, Madagascar, and Seychelles combine to shape East Africa. East African countries were once relatively developed economies compared to many other sub-Saharan countries. Kenya and the small island states have more developed economies than other countries in the region. Ethiopia has made great progress in the last 10 years. Agriculture is the backbone of the economy. Mining plays an important role in the economies of many countries. In addition, Réunion and Mayotte, the French overseas territories located in the Indian Ocean, are also grouped into Eastern Africa.
