Hello and welcome to Itenert. Ghana goes to the polls to elect a President and Members of Parliament on Monday 7th December. It will be the country’s eighth successive general election since the resumption of multiparty democracy in 1992. Ghanaians will go to the polls to elect a president and 275 members of parliament. Ghana has since transitioning to multiparty rule in 1992 conducted seven successful elections and witnessed three alternations of executive power. Facts About 2020 Election in Ghana
The first fact we will consider is the number of registered voters and the voting system.
There are 17, 027, 655 Ghanaians eligible to vote on December 7th in 33, 367 pollen stations across 16 regions of the country. Eligible Citizens will elect a president of Ghana for the next four years and members of parliament to represent Ghana’s 275 electoral constituencies.
Since de inception of de Fourth Republic, Ghana practice First Past the Post or Simple Majority voting system. Under de simple majority system, de candidate with de highest number of votes be the winner of de election.
Per de 1992 Constitution of Ghana, candidate who gets 50 percent plus of valid votes cast be the winner of de presidential elections and the parliamentary is won by simple majority.

Despite de 50 percent votes which determine who wins the elections, Ghana electoral system make provision in case no candidate secure more than 50 percent of total votes cast.
Per de 1992 Constitution of Ghana, if no candidate get over 50 percent votes, de electoral commission will hold second election between de two leading candidates within 21 days.
So voters will again queue to vote for de top two parties to determine who win de election.
Two candidates dominate the presidential race.
Seven successive democratic elections conducted in Ghana between 1992 and 2016 has resulted in peaceful alternation of power between two major political parties; namely the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The election under the 4th republic has always been between the two major political parties in the country and this year’s election is not different.
THE presidential election on Dec. 7 is expected to be a two-horse race between the incumbent, President Nana Akufo-Addo, and the leader of the main opposition party, former president John Dramani Mahama.
This year’s election is the third time the two candidates are meeting. The first time was in 2012 which was won by the former president John Dramani Mahama and the second one won by the incumbent president Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo Addo.
This election will be the first under the leadership of the new head of Ghana’s electoral commission.
In June 2018, the Chairman, Charlotte Osei and her two deputies were sacked by Nana Akufo-Addo, President of Ghana following an investigation by a committee set up by the Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, following various allegations of fraud and corruption leveled against them. In July 2018,the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo nominated 4 EC top officials The new Electoral Commissioner, Jean Adukwei Mensa along with her two new deputies, Samuel Tettey and Eric Bossman as well as another new member Adwoa Asuama Abrefa were all sworn in by President Akufo-Addo on 1 August 2018. The main opposition party has raised numerous concern about the new Electoral commissioner and we are to see their firs election.
