Glenmorangie 10 Year Single Malt Scotch Whisky Review
Description
The Whiskey Crusaders review Glenmorangie The Original 10 Year Single Malt Scotch which comes in at 86 proof. Glenmorangie uses first and second fill ex bourbon casks. The UK version is only 80 proof. Glenmorangie means valley of tranquility and is located in Tain, Ross-shire. Glenmorangie was founded in 1843 by William Matheson in the Highlands on the Dornoch Firth after buying out his former employer the brewery there. The 16 men of Tain are the craftsman that make the whiskey and keep the secrets of it. Each man was given a dram at lunch each day in the same cup that was passed around and turned black over time with use. In 2008 Glenmorangie went to have 24 people running the place with 4 extra stills installed. They have 8 stills now. Glenmorangie has the tallest stills in Scotland at 26 ft and ¼ inches tall. They started with 2 second hand gin stills and the neck of it is over 16ft which is the size of an adult giraffe which makes only the lightest and purest over the lyne arm. The Cadboll Stone on the bottle is from 297AD which were people in the Highlands that the Romans called the Picts who painted their body like the land around them and carved their history into this stone. This same land is where the barley comes from today and they own the Tarlogie Springs which is their water source and 650 acres around it to protect it. It is unique that all the water is from rain water filtered through limestone and sandstone so it is very pure mineral rich hard water. It was mothballed from 31 to 36 and again from 41 to 44 during the war. All products start in American White oak from the Ozarks Mountains of Missouri which they own and are air dried for 2 years before being lent to Jack Daniel and Heaven to age bourbon in for a minimum of 4 years before being shipped to Glenmorangie to be used for 10 years minimum before going into finishing casks. They do use a slightly peated malt at 2ppm in all their products as well as they are the reason for such much cask finishing with Dr. Bill Lumsden who created this after about 20 years plus of experimenting. They never use a cask more than twice. Dr. Bill Lumsden is also responsible for the revival of Ardbeg which are both bottled in Livingston, Scotland. Their casks are stored in stone earthen floors near the sea. Glenmorangie is the best-selling single malt in Scotland and has 6% of the whole world market.
