Description

A new green-powered classroom was unveiled recently at Clark County’s Department of Juvenile Justice Services Spring Mountain Youth Camp to help introduce youth to STEM-based careers in Nevada’s evolving green technology economy. The Clark County School District operates the Spring Mountain Jr./Sr. High School at the Spring Mountain Youth Camp. The camp is a juvenile detention center that serves male youth between the ages of 12 and 18. Leaders from Workforce Connections (Southern Nevada’s Local Workforce Investment Board), CCSD, Clark County commissioners and the Juvenile Justice Services department gathered with youth to celebrate the arrival of the new asset at the school. This partnership supports CCSD Superintendent Jesus F. Jara’s commitment to bring more career-focused resources to local high schools. The mobile lab houses STEM equipment designed to spark interest in solar, wind and energy-efficient career fields. Teachers at the Spring Mountain Jr./Sr. High School will be trained on the equipment by Workforce Connections staff. The lab will be incorporated into the school’s curriculum starting in January 2020. According to the Workforce Blueprint 2.0 recently released by the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance in conjunction with Workforce Connections and the Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce, all of the top 10 high-demand occupations in Nevada utilize science, technology, engineering and math principles. With Nevada’s low unemployment rate, employers are relying more and more on alternative labor pools such as the re-entry population to help fill these in-demand positions. For this program year, Workforce Connections has committed approximately $3.5 million in federal
