The 2020/21 Europa League final will be the first clash between Villarreal and Manchester United in over 10 years! Ole Gunnar Solskjaer & Unai Emery have met several times before, with the three most recent coming when Emery managed Arsenal. The Villarreal coach is a serial winner of the Europa League and won the trophy an unprecedented 3 consecutive times between 2014 and 2016.

The Yellow Submarine have the hallmarks of a classic Emery team. They look to build out from the back with short passes before looking for a vertical pass into a forward. Alternatively, they will look for direct ball over the top to try and catch teams out. Without the ball, Villarreal defend in a compact 4-4-2 that sees them press in a 4-3-3. The Spaniards aren’t the most aggressive pressers but they do operate with a very high line to compress the pitch. This means there’s usually space to attack in behind - something that Manchester United have to capitalise on.

Their key guy in attack is Gerard Moreno. The 29 year old is enjoying his best season in terms of goals scored and assists registered. Moreno is more of a second striker and tends to drop deep whilst his strike partner usually plays on the last line. Stopping Villarreal’s number 7 will be crucial to stopping Villarreal, especially with right winger Samuel Chukwueze as an injury doubt.

Manchester United should approach this game with a counter attacking mentality to make the most of the space in behind Villarreal’s backline as well as their sluggish centre halves. An attacking trio of Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood & Edinson Cavani playing ahead of Bruno Fernandes is likely the most dangerous lineup. This unit should off speed on the transition which will be crucial in unlocking Emery’s side. It’ll also give Solskjaer the option to bring on a world class talent from the bench in Paul Pogba - which could help sway the final in Gdansk.

But anyway guys, what do you think? Who do you think will win the Europa League in Gdansk? Let me know your score predictions in the comments below.
