Unfortunately, but understandably, he did run into a bit of a snafu during the whole draft process. Nearly all of the NFL teams were wary of taking Mathieu, fearing that his past would again come rearing its ugly head.

The only team who decided to roll the dice and take a chance on Mathieu, were the Arizona Cardinals, where he had an established All-Pro in Patrick Peterson vouching for him heavily.

Mathieu also submitted to an extensive drug testing program – and proved he was in fact clean and ready to make an impact at the NFL level.

The Cardinals stayed true to their word – and ended up taking Mathieu in the third round of the 2012 NFL draft, which ended up being a steal considering that, despite struggling with injuries early in his career, Mathieu – like Peterson – earned All Pro honors for Arizona.
