How much do you know about North East India. Some of the best places to travel across the North Eastern states are captured in this amazing video. Also listed below are the 'Top 21 reasons to fall in love with North East India' (Not an exhaustive list though).

#1) No Dowry. India's largest & only Matrilineal system is followed in Meghalaya, where the daughters inherit their ancestral property & the last names.
#2) Asia Cleanest village: Mawlynnong
From Shillong, one can head to Mawlynnong famous for being the cleanest village (2003) as per travel magazine Discover India, not just in India, but in Asia.
#3) Last surviving Headhunters, are still to be found in Nagaland.
#4) Sikkim Kangchenjunga National Park is the only mixed UNESCO world heritage site. Kangchenjunga National Park (KNP), Sikkim has been inscribed as India's first “Mixed World Heritage Site” on UNESCO World Heritage List, by fulfilling the nomination criteria under both natural and cultural heritage.
#5) Barter system still in vogue. In Assam's Jonbeel Mela, near Morigaon, Guwahati, the locals from nearby plains and hills come over & the market comes lively with the barter system. The exchange of goods takes place as per one's need.
#6) Digboi, Asia's first oil refinery was established.
Digboi is known as the Oil City of Assam when crude oil was discovered in late 19th century & successively the first oil refinery was started here as early as 1901.
#7) The world’s seven richest biodiversity areas are to be found in Northeast India. As per by Myers 2000 report, North East India has been identified as one of the world's seven richest biodiversity areas.
#8) World's second largest Buddhist monastery is in Tawang.
The 400+ year old Golden Namgyal Lhatse Monastery in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh is the largest monastery in India and second largest in the world after the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet and controls 17 plus Gompas in the nearby area.
#9) Kangchenjunga is the third highest peak in the world, partly placed in Sikkim (& Nepal). Kangchenjunga, also spelled Kanchenjunga. It lies between Nepal and Sikkim, India
#10) India's first sunrise happens in Arunachal Pradesh. This a much sought after scene and people longing to catch the first ever sun rays in Arunachal Pradesh. A small hike leads to the very spot where one can experience the magical sun shine of India.
#11) World's wettest place (consistently over the years) is found in Meghalaya. Meghalaya, meaning "abode of the clouds," is home to the top two wettest places on earth, according to Guinness World Records.
Also Mawlynnong-the cleanest village of Asia, the country's highest plunge waterfall & people who are very fond of western popular music culture can be found.
#12) The record for most literary rates is to be found in North East India.
The North East Indian states literary rates are staggeringly high than the national average of 74, of all the states, Mizoram has the highest literacy rate of 91.3%
#13) A Guinness World Record was created in Nagaland for the World’s Largest Electric Guitar Ensemble.
#14) The world's largest bird migration happens from SA to Nagaland
Nagaland in North East India, covering up to a staggering 22,000 km. They cover Mongolia, Siberia, Northern China & Japan in their migratory path.
#15) The only all women market, where only women can keep shops, can be found in Manipur.
#16) Its legal to gamble, only in Sikkim(first in India)
#17) Shops without shopkeepers, Mizoram
The local shop keepers, peasants believe and manage running their business/shops with high honesty and leave their shops open for costumers whom they hardly come face to face.
#18) Surprisingly, The Mughal Empire (1526–1761) couldn't occupy North East India regions, the only part of India left out during their conquests.
#19) Assam is recorded as the world's largest tea growing place, collectively Assam's contribution is around 1,500 million pounds (680,500,000 kg) of tea. Did you know that during the British Raj, there was a separate time zone for Assam Tea Gardens termed the Tea Garden Time/Bagan time/Myanmar Time which was an hour ahead of the IST-Indian Standard Time. Assam is ranked second in tea production (first is China).
#20) The Brahmaputra river flows from China to India & then to Bangladesh, the only trans boundary international river that flows through 3 countries, covering major North East India states & in Bangladesh, the Jamuna is joined by couple of major mighty rivers before finally ending its long journey into the Bay of Bengal Ocean.
#21) As per Guinness World records 2007, the Nagaland Chilli ( "Bhut jolokia") has the record for being the hottest chilli in the world.
