India's top court refuses to put controversial citizenship law on hold
Description
India's Supreme Court has refused to stop the implementation of a new citizenship law, which has triggered over two months of nationwide protests. Critics call the legislation discriminatory, as it excludes Muslims from a fast-track path to Indian citizenship. The Supreme Court said it cannot scrap the legislation without giving the government a chance to respond. More than 140 legal petitions have been filed against the law, calling it unconstitutional. The court has given officials four weeks to file a reply, and the next hearing will take place at the end of February.
