India's top court rules internet shutdown in Kashmir is illegal

India's Supreme Court has ordered the government to restore the internet in Kashmir, ruling that the communication shutdown was unconstitutional. In August, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government had shut down mobile and internet networks to try to quell unrest after it stripped Kashmir of its autonomy. The region has been under security lockdown for more than five months. The court said internet access is a "constitutionally protected fundamental right", and wants the government to explain the need for the restrictions imposed.
