"The only two ways out are prison or death." Brut met with poppy farmers and opium producers in Mexico and saw a whole new side to the drug trafficking trade.
Today, Brut is going to Mexico to show you the real people who produce the drugs that end up on the American market. Brut's lead foreign correspondent, Charles Villa, started on an opium farm in the mountains of Guerrero. It's one of the country's most dangerous states, and one of the top producers of heroin.
To get to the poppy plants, our reporter had to cross this corn field. The corn plants grew up to 9 feet tall, enough to hide the poppy field behind it. This entire field was poppy plants, the raw material for opium.
After that, Charles visited a laboratory used by the Sinaloa cartel, often considered the most powerful drug cartel in Latin America. They rarely allow journalists to film their activities, but our reporter was able to see how they prepared their product before shipping it to the U.S. He was driven out into the countryside, miles away from the nearest village, and that's where he was shown the narcos' lab.
