Johnny Depp Asks Court to Order ACLU Show Proof That Amber Heard Donated Her Divorce Settlement

The "Pirates of the Caribbean" star sued the American Civil Liberties Union to force the nonprofit to provide proof that his ex-wife Amber Heard actually donated her divorce settlement.

Court documents show that Johnny Depp and his attorneys "respectfully" asked the court for an order ordering the ACLU's witnesses to comply fully with the subpoenas.

The subpoenas are for “discovery regarding any donation to the ACLU Foundation by or on behalf of Ms. Heard, and / or any public statement relating to such donations; communications with Ms. Heard or persons acting on her behalf regarding her relationship with Mr. Depp and her divorce from Mr. Depp; find out about Ms. Heard's work as an ACLU Foundation “Ambassador” and the layout, writing and location of the publisher; and communications with Ms. Heard or those acting on her behalf regarding the Virginia action and the preparation and filing of the Wizner Statement. "


Heard had previously pledged to donate his $ 7 million divorce settlement to the ACLU and Los Angeles Children's Hospital shortly after she finalized her divorce from Depp. According to court documents, filed by Depp and his attorneys in New York and obtained by PEOPLE, they asked the two organizations to share how much Heard has donated.

In the court papers, Depp "respectfully requests that the court issue an order directing ACLU witnesses to comply fully with the subpoenas." Depp is seeking documents for his pending $ 50 million defamation case against Heard for his 2018 editorial on domestic violence in the Washington Post.

The subpoenas are intended for “the discovery of any donation to the ACLU Foundation by or on behalf of Ms. Heard, and / or any public statement relating to such donations; communications with Ms. Heard or those acting on her behalf regarding her relationship with Mr. Depp and Mr. Depp's divorce; find out about Ms. Heard's work as the ACLU Foundation `` Ambassador '' and the design, writing and placement of Op-Ed; and communications with Ms. Heard or those acting on her behalf regarding the Virginia Action and the preparation and filing of the Wizner Statement. "

In a written ruling issued by the London Court of Appeal, Justices Lord Justice Underhill and Lord Justice Dingemans dismissed the plaintiff's request for a new trial on the grounds that a second hearing was unlikely to produce a different outcome.

Heard and Depp were married in 2015. In May 2016, she filed for a domestic violence restraining order against her, accusing him of abusing her. Depp rejected the requests and the former couple settled their divorce out of court in August 2016.

Depp had previously claimed that Heard, 35, had failed to donate the money while she hoped to overturn her ruling in her "women rapist" defamation case against The Sun in the UK earlier this year. Depp's lawyers argued that the judge got carried away by Heard's charity promises.

In response, Heard's legal team said she had done "nothing dishonest" with her donations to the two charities and "promised to pay more than 10 years", which, they added, was "understood" by the ACLU.
To back this up, Heard's attorneys provided their own evidence, which they said showed that the Aquaman star actually gave a total of $ 950,000 to the ACLU and $ 850,000 to the children's hospital through anonymous donors.
