Description
Kanyakumari
The district of Thiruvananthapuram was separated from the former Kingdom of Travancore to form a new district called Kanyakumari and it was incorporated in 1956 as part of the Madras Presidency under the recommendations of the State Reorganization Commission. The President was later renamed Tamil Nadu, today it is Kanyakumari and today, 37 districts of Tamil Nadu state.
In the Kanyakumari district there is a sea on three sides and the mountains of the Western Ghats on the northern boundary. With the exception of a small area west of Kanyakumari, almost the entire district is sandwiched between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea - the only district in the state of Tamil Nadu that faces the Arabian Sea.
The Kanyakumari District is divided into two parts, the Edai country and the Nanjil country. The Vilavancode and Kalkulam talukas are in the Edai region, which covers the entire Western Ghats. The Tanjalai and Agastheeswaram talukas are located in the countryside of Nanjil. The Aravalimoji bass divides these two parts. The boundary of these regions is Wijimalai (Vaigai Hills).
