Mark Hughes took his first steps into management before his playing career ended when Bobby Gould stepped down as Wales manager and recommended Hughes and fellow international Neville Southall to take over.
His playing days were winding down but he combined the Wales job with playing Premier League football for Blackburn Rovers and still very nearly took Wales to their first major international tournament in almost half a century but narrowly lost out to Russia in a Euro 2004 qualifying playoff.
A 1-0 defeat at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff was tough to take but Hughes, now two decades into his managerial career, recognises that he made mistakes that night that might have cost Wales a place at the Euros.
Nevertheless, Hughes’ experiences in charge of Wales laid the foundation for a long and successful career in management.
