National shutdown at tertiary institutions called off
Description
The 2020 academic year started off with protest action and a call for a national shutdown due to student debt at some higher education institutions.
However, the ministry of Education, Science and Technology announced Sunday that the national shutdown of tertiary institutions that began last week has been called off. The minister of Education, Science and Technology, Dr Blade Nzimande met with the South African Union of Students recently to discuss their grievances.
The students demanded that those with historical National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) debt be allowed to register for the new academic year.
Joining us from our studio in Pretoria is Ismael Mnisi, the spokesperson of the ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
