NGK IRIDIUM SPARK PLUG INSTALL! | FOCUS RS | MOUNTUNE PRE - GAPPED
Description
The latest install of new performance parts for my Ford Focus RS!
The part or parts that I am installing today are the NGK Iridium IX one step colder spark plugs!
These top quality spark plugs were purchased from Mountune who have pre-gapped them to speed up the installation process by taking out the necessary step of gapping to a certain level which of course also makes the install easier than if just buying the spark plugs off the shelf!
These are some of the best rated spark plugs for the MK3 Ford Focus RS along with the similar Denso Iridium spark plugs. In a stock or stage 1 mapped RS, they will provide an improvement in smoother acceleration as well as helping with any rough idle issues but the most amount of benefit is to be found on a stage 2 or beyond tune.
While Mountune sell these plugs and explain the benefits on their website, they do not specifically say in their power upgrade packages that the plugs are needed but other tuners do such as Motorsport Developments who make the MSD400 and MSD420 stage 2 maps.
I show the spark plug removal and installation process - which is very quick and easy - as well as showing the new NGK Iridium spark plugs side by side with a Ford Motorcraft spark plug, which I think look pretty similar other than branding as I am told that Ford buys and re-brands NGK plugs (but not these specific spec of plug!)
The condition of my Ford Motorcraft plugs is pretty excellent - no real signs of wear. This is because I had my 3 year 'major' service just one month ago and in that service, the spark plugs were changed. Considering the normal service life is 3 years or 30K miles, it is no surprise that they look almost new.
You may ask then why bother changing the plugs now?
The answer is that I am building my way to being ready for a stage 2 power level so having this done is simply one small piece in the puzzle of being ready for stage 2 power!
All in all I would recommend these plugs to anyone, no-matter the power level you are running. They are a lovely quality plug and probably don't cost any/much more than a Ford Motorcraft plug so if you are doing a spark plug change yourself then go for a set of these!
Here is what Mountune say about these plugs:
Ecoboost engines running substantially higher boost pressure or increased levels of tuning compared to the OE power output can experience reduced spark plug life resulting in lower engine performance, misfires and rough idle.
Increased wear is typically seen in the form of increased spark plug gap and degradation of the electrode. Using spark plugs that are optimised for increased power ensures maximum performance.
Extensive in-market validation at extreme boost / cylinder pressures was undertaken to ensure optimal performance was achieved, whilst also making sure reliability and drive-ability wasn't compromised in colder ambients.
Each set is supplied pre-gapped by Mountune to optimise the setting and allow for easier end-user installation.
