In the initial years West Indies were the dominant ODI side, capturing the 1975 and 1979 World Cup. But India broke their monopoly in 1983, with Australia soon claiming top spot in the rankings. The return of South Africa in 1991 saw them soon re-establish themselves as a strong force, and they went on to dominate cricket in the 1990s.

With their victory in the 1999 World Cup, after the famous tied semi-final with South Africa, Australia became the top team for over a decade under Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting. Winning 3 consecutive World Cups, they were dethroned by India in 2011 under MS Dhoni. This marked a new phase where India began to dominate the rankings. Eventually in 2018, England reached the top and are currently the No.1 side after winning the 2019 World Cup in controversial circumstances.
