President Donald Trump said Friday in his first comments since authorizing a military strike that killed a top Iranian general that “we do not seek regime change.”

“We took action last night to stop a war,” Trump told reporters in Florida. “We did not take action to start a war.”

His comments came after defense officials said the United States is sending nearly 3,000 more Army troops to the Mideast as reinforcements in the volatile aftermath of the killing of Gen. Qasem Soleimani.
