Prime Time, April 07, 2020 | Lockdown Makes India's Unemployment Rate Worse

According to data released by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy, India's unemployment rate has increased to an alarming 23.4 per cent. According to Mahesh Vyas, MD and CEO of CMIE, the unemployment rate had started increasing since January 2020 itself and it has reached its highest level after the coronavirus lockdown in India. On today's Prime Time, our correspondent Himanshu Shekhar Mishra speaks to workers from Noida in Uttar Pradesh about the effect of the lockdown on their livelihood. The daily wage earners say that they haven't been able to find work and are finding it hard feeding themselves and their families. According to one of the workers, he was sent back saying his papers were not in place when he tried to avail of the government's food grain distribution scheme for poor. (Audio in Hindi)
