Promotion speech by A Professor Dr Zia ul Mazhry at Wapda House Uditotium 21 April 2016. The speech was delivered during a reception by Chairman Wapda to honour Wapda officers promoted in Grade 20. Dr Akmal Faiz Bhatti DGMS Wapda was very kind to nominate Dr Zia ul Mazhry to represent and talk on behalf of promotees of Wapda Medical Services.
Mr Chairman WAPDA Pakistan, Honorable Authority members, Respected Managing Director WAPDA and distinguished guests, first of all, I like to thank you, Sir, for giving me this privilege to talk in front of this august gathering. it has been an honour for me to have been one of the recipients of promotion in BPS 20 in WAPDA Medical Services.
I belong to a village from District Narowal and to date, enjoy the status of the top scorer on the role of honour of Government Islamia High School DudhuChak, I say milk Chak. Got my Fsc from Govt college Lahore and MBBS from Allama Iqbal Medical College in 1990.

Allah has blessed me with two fellowships in Ophthalmology from Royal Colleges of Edinburgh and Glasgow United Kingdom and one from our own esteemed institution, that is, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan. I hold the certification by the International Council of Ophthalmology and memberships of European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Recently,I had my silver jubilee in ophthalmology and completed 25 years of ethical and dedicated, scientific ophthalmic practice. This experience has been diverse, all in tertiary care hospitals in Pakistan and abroad.

WAPDA Medical Services was not my initial career choice. I accepted this on the advice of my mentor “Professor Wasif M Kadri” marhoom. I must say رحمت اللہ علیہ I still remember his words “WAPDA is a big department and you have the fragrance of ophthalmic knowledge and skills. The fragrance will spread and they will honour and acknowledge you” His prediction and dream came true.

WAPDA authority was kind enough to allow a new space and provide state of art audio-visual equipment and laser machines to the department. We have established cataract, glaucoma and medical retina clinics along with comprehensive eye care facilities.

The eye department is recognized by Pakistan Medical and Dental Council for postgraduate training. We are in process under kind leadership of our DGMS, to get it affiliated with CPSP Pakistan for resident training as well.

Last 10 years, we have presented more than 100 scientific research papers in national ophthalmology meetings and about 50 lectures and papers in international conferences. One of my innovative eye surgery videos won the global video Contest 2014 by American Academy of Ophthalmology and is the only video from any Pakistani Ophthalmologist on American Academy’s website.

Ophthalmological Society of Pakistan has awarded me with three gold medals. I have got an International Ophthalmology education award 2015 by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. I thank my seniors and the authority, in particular, to allow me to proudly represent my department and my country on podiums of Asia Pacific, Europe and America.

I believe that the pivot of any health system is a patient and a patient only. Special thanks are due to my patients who deposed faith in me and permitted me to treat them. It is their prayers and appreciation which has made me stand out.

That is what I expect from a doctor and try to practice my self in its true sense

Mr Chairman, we as doctors hold relevant positions in WAPDA medical facilities. I assure you, Sir, that you have got a fully committed and capable medical faculty. We are responsible for the physical, mental, social and spiritual health of Wapda employees, that is health. Thus we are related to all the sections of Wapda authority.

Dear Sir, we are fully conscious of our responsibilities. With due regard, I suggest making WAPDA teaching hospital, a national pride by commissioning a WAPDA Medical College. This will not only make our hospital self-sufficient but will also bring medical services at par with international standards.

It’s been an honour to be amongst such accomplished individuals and to be able to present my perspective before you. Thanks to all my friends and family members who supported me all the way and all my seniors, colleagues and students as well.

I conclude my speech with a slogan cure with care.
